Behavioral Health Services

MA’AT

Ma’at provides culturally responsive mental health services for Black youth (0-17) in San Francisco. Rooted in cultural identity and community, Ma’at fosters trust by pairing clients with clinicians who share their lived experiences. Services include individual and family therapy, parenting support, and case management, offered in schools, homes, the community, or via telehealth.

CITY-WIDE COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH

HCN provides EPSDT to children, youth, and families across San- Francisco. Our direct mental health treatment is culturally responsive therapy which interrupts the cycle of poverty and violence and changes the trajectories of families for generations to come. Treatment includes assessment, development of a Plan of Care, and referrals.

CHILD PARENT PSYCHOTHERAPY

Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) at HCN helps young children (0-5) and their caregivers heal from stress and trauma. Rooted in family strengths and cultural values, CPP strengthens parent-child relationships, fosters resilience, and supports emotional well-being after difficult experiences.

CLINICAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

HCN’s highly regarded Clinical Internship Program is for graduate students in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Psychology and volunteer post-graduate interns. Interns provide children and families with individual, family, and dyadic therapy through our Medi-Cal- funded programming. The program includes theoretical perspectives including attachment-based psychotherapy, understanding group work, behavioral interventions in school settings, common topics present in session such as trauma and grief, play therapy and drama therapy experiential trainings, and how to maintain the client relationship at each stage of therapy.

CASE MANAGEMENT

HCN helps community members obtain stable housing, pursue educational and vocational opportunities, and meet the physical and mental needs of their families. Youth and families receive services to help them overcome problems with housing as well as transportation, public benefits, education, employment, and other issues. Case managers provide referrals and linkages and work with clients to ensure they are receiving needed services.

AFRI-CENTRIC COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH

Africentric Community Mental Health fosters healing, empowerment, and well-being in San Francisco’s Black community. Led by HCN, ACMH addresses systemic disparities through an Africentric mental health model, including Sacred Space conversations, LGBTQ+ support, and early childhood educator consultations. Partnering with community leaders, ACMH creates safe spaces and drives lasting, community-led change.

ENTRE NOSOTROS

HCN’s Entre Nosotros  program cultivates intergenerational healing for Spanish speaking communities to uplift and enhance mental health and wellness through culturally rooted trauma and healing based services. In addition to direct therapeutic work, HCN will offer case management and parent groups in Spanish to support newcomer families (families that have recently arrived) & undocumented folx, specifically those who may typically encounter language barriers when seeking out mental health resources.

Early Childhood Mental Health

EARLY CHILDHOOD MENTAL HEALTH CONSULTATION

 For over 25 years, HCN has been providing ECMHC services supporting children ages 0-5, their families, and everyone who makes up our system of care in San Francisco. HCN is 1 of 4 providers currently part of SF’s ECMHCI, and the only that is Black-led and serves predominantly BIPOC and Black/African American children and families. Services include mental health consultation, family education and support groups, training and support for providers, ages and stages developmental screenings, referrals for specialized services, and school/classroom observation.

BLACK BIRTHING HEALTH INITIATIVE

HCN's Black Birthing Health Initiative (BBHI) is a comprehensive and vital community wellness program aimed at addressing the unique needs of Black/African American birthing individuals and their families in San Francisco. This initiative is designed to promote mental health and wellness, provide client-centered and culturally tailored care, and ensure accessibility to essential services.

HCN offers an array of substance use education, prevention, and treatment programs that support individuals and organizations serving individuals and families, service providers, educators, and community members in comprehensive efforts to address substance use.

JABALI PREVENTION & EDUCATION

The Jabali Program is a substance use education, prevention, and treatment program that supports individuals and organizations serving Black/African American individuals and families, service providers, educators, and community members in comprehensive efforts to address substance use.

Youth Development 

Youth leadership and advocacy programs in self-care, self-advocacy, communication, teamwork, time management, critical thinking, analysis, and community advocacy.

MA’AT YOUTH LEADERSHIP

Peer groups empower youth via community building, communication, teamwork, advocacy, storytelling, and self-care activities. Youth receive mentorship to help them set and achieve goals. Mental health and self-care are the foundation for leadership.

JABALI YOUTH ADVOCACY

This youth-led committee empowers young voices to be heard and amplified regarding substance abuse and prevention. The program supports youth leaders aged 14-17, including those at risk and system-involved, in building advocacy skills, creating messaging platforms, and taking action to address substance use in San Francisco.

Workforce Development

Education and employment opportunities in the mental health field supporting the growth in mental health professionals trained to meet the community's urgent needs.

AMANI WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Amani provides new education and employment opportunities in the mental health field for Black/ African American city residents and grows the number of peer support and mental health professionals trained to meet the urgent need for Afri-centric, culturally responsive mental health and wellness in San Francisco. The vision is to reimagine conventional mental health education and employment pathways and infuse an Afri-centric approach throughout by growing the individual and communal sense of ownership and affirmation within these spaces.
